The Vanishing (1988) aka Spoorloos

Director: George Sluzier

Starring: Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu, Gene Bervoets

One of the scarriest movies I’ve ever seen, this Dutch film plays at the base fears of every man, being powerless at the hands of a mad man.  American audiences may be more familiar with its remake starring Kiefer Sutherland, and the plot is similar, seeing how the director also created that film.  However, the plot is where the similarity ends, as the actor who plays the mad man delivers such a powerful, disturbing performance escalating the tension of this film through the roof.  The way in which his character is depicted as a secret sociopath, with a perfect family, job, and home makes the crime even more dispeccable and shocking.  The ending of the film is also bleaker and more dreadful making this a truly horrifying film to behold.
